Smarter but older

Filed under: Entrepreneur, Random, startup — Xavier Casanova @ 5:04 pm

I enjoy grabbing a cup of coffee at my local Starbucks once in a while around 8AM in a week day. I live close to a high-school and it’s interesting to see teenagers hangout, interact with each other, etc.

This morning I took my traditional Grande Coffee, Chocolate croissant, and found a chair near a group of loud kids getting ready to cross the street to got to class. I could not understand what they were talking about - too much slang, too much unsaid, etc. In other words: me start to feel old. Can wisdom compensate for that fact of life? It absolutely does.

Cost per vote

As a quick follow up on my post yesterday, see this article on Yahoo news: U.S. Congress campaign cost expected to set record.

U.S. candidates and their political allies will spend a record $2.6 billion on campaigns for November elections […] comes to an average of $59 per vote in Senate races and $35 per vote in the House of Representatives…

I just cannot believe these numbers. Incredible.

Chef d’oeuvre

For those of you interested in the future of online marketing, buzz marketing and blogging, listen to this podcast from TalkCrunch: Episode 13: PayPerPost raises $3 million. I have a very strong opinion on this, but the Overture/sponsored search comment at the end of the podcast was kind of interesting.

By the way, I am impressed by how everyone kept their cool and managed to laugh a bit. Pretty jabby.

Wordpress 2.0.4

The upgrade was easy. I see a lot of new features in the dashboard area, but most important for me is comment moderation. We’ll how it goes, maybe I can safely turn comments back on without been innundated with spam.

Talking to a machine

Filed under: Random — Xavier Casanova @ 11:02 am

I called Ofoto to inquire about an order I placed 3 weeks ago and still hasn’t been received. Got the automated voice, cleared all the questions OK, but in the end I didn’t get the info I was looking for. So frustrating.

Thinking back, I spent 5 minutes on the call, max. Much less than the 20-30 mins I spent on their site looking for the information. So why did I get upset after the automated voice? (a) I called to talk to a “human”, not a machine, and (b) It’s painful to spelling out all the info (name, order number, etc), hear it back, etc, and (c) Lack of feedback. I wasn’t in control and never knew if I was headed in the right direction.

So when I call, let me talk to someone, please.

Long hiatus

Filed under: Random — Xavier Casanova @ 10:24 pm

Wow - can’t believe I haven’t posted anything since July 21st! Added a few new categories to the blog, I’m planning on talking more and more about a/ experiences as an entrepreneur (if that can be useful to anyone), b/ communication tools (in connection with Perenety), c/ random stuff.

And since I am fundamentally a numbers freak, I’ll still post a lot about Web analytics (nobody’s perfect!).

Blog issues

Filed under: Random — Xavier Casanova @ 10:17 pm

The blog’s been down for a few days. MySQL error 28… Since I don’t have lots of empty cycles I strongly considered moving this blog away from my basement Linux PC to a something like TypePad - but I’m cheap and also like the idea of having a web server downstairs.

On another note, the comments have been closed for months. Way too much spam for me to deal with. Looked for a few wordpress plugins, but there again, I don’t have time to take care of this… Maybe in the next few weeks.
